SINGAPORE : After 22 months of renovations, the Smith Street market in Chinatown is set to re-open on Thursday.

However, only about 10 percent of the stalls will resume business as a majority of the them is still undergoing minor renovation work.

The market and food centre, closed since 1 July 2006, has been transformed with an infusion of Chinese and western culture.

Rent has also increased by 30 to 100 percent – based on the works done and if you are a first or second generation stallholder.

And stallholders are happy with the new look.

“The place is spacious. The old round tables are gone. It’s easier to walk around now,” said one stallholder.

Another said: “There are a lot of tables. The floor is cleaner and the ventilation is better.” – CNA /ls
